  • On this day 10 years ago the CW’s Vortexx block closed down

It’s been a whole decade since the CW’s animated programming block Vortexx shut down and Funimation’s edited dub of Dragon Ball Kai was last seen in the US.

Kai premiered on Vortexx the day it launched on August 25th 2012 at 10:30am after a very successful run on the CW’s previous block Toonzai, as well as Nicktoons, but on the week of January 19th 2013 episodes began airing at the slightly earlier slot of 10am.

Kai then received new episodes from April 13th and a double bill followed starting May 18th until the week of August 10th, and then the week after for the remainder of the run it was a single timeslot at 10am each week.

Saban’s Kidsco Media Ventures LCC bought Toonzai and rebranded it after the splitting of 4Kids’ assets between themselves and Konami’s 4K Acquisition Corp.

The closure of Vortexx marked the first time in 50 years there were no Saturday morning cartoons on traditional TV in the US, following Fox’s decision to drop them in 2008, ABC signing over its block to Litton in 2011, and with Vortexx becoming the last remaining non-educational block without live action programming its demise marked the end an era.

The CW block was replaced by a new block titled One Magnificent Morning, which included half-hour programmes on healthy cooking, fashion and animal care.

At one point Vortexx aired a special, which featured Sonic summarizing the Saiyan arc, referring to Piccolo a Saiyan and their website at the time stated Kai took place “five years after the events of the original Dragon Ball Z series”, both of which were likely unintentional errors.

As Dragon Ball Community pointed out on Twitter while Toonzai marked the CW premier of the Saiyan and Freeza arcs, Vortexx was the first (and only time) the channel aired the Cell arc, and less episodes were aired over time on Vortexx because it was a Saturday morning block only. Nonetheless the channel aired a large number of episodes, so it was a massive success.

As Toonzai only had the first 52 episodes of Kai at the time of the sale, episodes 53-99 of Kai were likely purchased some time prior to the Vortexx block being launched, or during Dragon Ball Kai’s run on the channel. The Kanzenshuu staff at the time joked on episode 296 of their podcast about Saban not being able to count past 53, as this was the point the original US Dragon Ball Z dub left off when Saban’s association with Funimation (which was mostly syndicating the show and getting it timeslots) originally ended.

Dragon Ball Kai ran on Vortexx concurrently with the Nicktoons broadcast, which continued until April 2013, but when the show left the latter the CW’s block became the exclusive home of the 20th anniversary version of Dragon Ball Z on North American TV.

On the Toonzone forums a number of views were expressed over the fall of Vortexx with some regarding its end as the greatest mistake of the animation medium and others acknowledging that even without many other streaming services it was at a disadvantage in the TV landscape of its time.

The end of Vortexx marked a cultural shift of Dragon Ball on US TV, as only a few weeks after the block closed Dragon Ball Kai began airing on Adult Swim’s Toonami block, which was where Dragon Ball Kai: The Final Chapters and Dragon Ball Super premiered in the country.

To this day Dragon Ball has not returned to kids TV in the US, despite the monumental success it had 20-25 years ago on Toonami. It remains to be seen whether or not it will.

Nonetheless as we can see from this Kanzenshuu thread there are indeed fans who not only grew up watching Dragon Ball Kai on the CW but also have fond memories of it:

In any case whether or not Vortexx was in the wrong place at the wrong time we can be grateful that it introduced more kids to Dragon Ball, which is all we can ask for at the end of the day.

The Search for the Mysterious Laboratory! in the Japanese version), and the first 99 episodes should be on the streaming service by November 14th.

Should there be any more exciting updates for Spain it will of course be reported here.

  • Dragon Ball Kai artificial humans and original Dragon Ball 21st Tenkaichi Budokai arcs coming to Anime Box in Spain

As of writing this article episode 56 of Dragon Ball Kai has been uploaded to Selecta Vision’s streaming platform in Spain known as Anime Box.

With a new episode released every weekday, tomorrow will see the release of episode 57 (titled Welcome Back Son Goku! The Confession of the Mysterious Young Boy Trunks) with the new Castilian Spanish dub.

Additionally the VOD platform has more catalogue content with further episodes of original Dragon Ball being released every Friday. Today’s update was a reminder for viewers the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai will be released in 4 days.

The above can be translated as:

“Are you enjoying the first saga of #DragonBall?
📣 Well, I bring good news: Every Friday you will have a new complete saga in AnimeBox! Folded and in VOSE, to give you a good marathon of power all week.

This Friday 20/09 we will see the 21st Martial Arts Tournament, don’t miss it! 🤖”

Last Friday (September 13th) saw the release of the Pilaf arc, so expect episodes 14-28 this week.

  • We reported today that the Basque and Galician dubs became available for Dragon Ball Kai on Selecta Vision’s video-on-demand service Anime Box.

Additionally today the Cell saga has become available on the platform.

The above comment Anime Box posted yesterday, as translated by Google can be read as:

🟠 “Dragon Ball Z Kai Update: The Cell Saga starts tomorrow 13/09, and will do it with Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Euskera dubbing!

From Monday 16th all episodes published up to the date of #DBZKai will also feature Euskera and Galician dubbing, which were missing to be included.”

This will likely mean all 98 episodes of Dragon Ball Kai (excluding The Final Chapters, which can technically be counted as a separate show) are now available to view for Spanish audiences.

  • Euskera and Galician dubs to be added to Dragon Ball Kai on Anime Box

Previously Selecta Vision’s streaming platform Anime Box began releasing Dragon Ball Kai for Spanish audiences with a new Castilian dub.

Now it has been revealed that from September 16th (which is next Monday) Euskera and Galician will be added as audio tracks.

These language options are now available for the first 13 episodes of original Dragon Ball, which were added recently, but were absent from Kai on the service.

The previous Dragon Ball series also received Euskera (known as Basque natively) dubbing, as well as Galician, and the original series first 13 episodes is currently available in the language.

Further episodes will be available at a later stage, as well as the Valencian dub.

  • Dragon Ball Kai expected to be released in the Netherlands tomorrow

At this year’s Heroes Comic Con on the weekend of June 22nd-23rd the company who previously released a Dragon Ball Super: Broly Blu-Ray Periscoop Anime casually presented a Dragon Ball Kai banner, prompting speculation the series might finally be coming to the Netherlands.

Periscoop Anime have a streaming service called GoAnime (not to be confused with the illegal streaming site GoGoAnime), which it is expected Dragon Ball Kai will be released on, although as they are also a home video distributor a DVD or Blu-Ray release may be possible.

Although the company never announced a release date on their social media, or issued a press release, a fan was told it would be September 6th, and that Kai would be available on another Dutch streaming service named Videoland.

After further fan enquiries Periscoop checked with their material manager that confirmed their contract included Japanese and Dutch audios with Dutch subtitles and that they were looking into an English option if enough potential viewers were interested. In a tweet I made that received 4,345 views, 25, likes, 22 retweets and 3 comments as of this date fans expressed a desire to see the unreleased Ocean Productions dub of Dragon Ball Kai.

As there has never been a Dutch dub of Dragon Ball this will be the first of its kind, and it remains to be seen whether Periscoop will acquire Funimation’s dub of Kai or take the extra initiative, as fans have advised for licensing the Ocean dub. Nonetheless, Videoland forwarded on the request to the relevant department about what needs to be paid attention to in future.

  • POP UK responds to fan enquiry about airing Dragon Ball Kai

The former Sony Pictures Television broadcaster, which is now owned by Narrative Entertainment has responded to a fan enquiry about them airing Dragon Ball Kai.

POP previously aired Dragon Ball Super, which premiered in the UK and Ireland in July 2019, has been in reruns since and only in the last few months been removed from POP’s schedule, although many promotional videos can still be found on their website suggesting they have not lost the rights yet.

Dragon Ball Kai previously aired in the UK and Ireland on the now defunct channel Kix (owned by another one of POP’s previous owners CSC Media), but despite a lot of rumours at the time the channel ended up airing the Funimation dub, allegedly because TOEI gave them no other option. This may have been because Manga UK’s season DVDs of Dragon Ball Z, which contained the Funimation dub were being released at the time as a means of avoiding marketing confusion, or Funimation might have pulled some strings, but unfortunately clarity was never given on this.

It is worth noting both WOW Unlimited and Toon-A-Vision negotiated with TOEI to acquire the rights to Ocean Productions’ English dub of Dragon Ball Kai, and the company’s long standing producer Diana Gage has previously said fans should make their voices heard if they wish for this dub to see the light of day.

It would inevitably be a great opportunity for POP if they were to air Dragon Ball Kai with an English dub that is not widely available or seen, and has a built-in fanbase with actors like Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil, but until then the best that can be hoped for is enough fans reach out to them advising they seek out the Ocean dub.

  • Dragon Ball going strong on Polsat Games

Nearly six years after its premier on Polsat Games Dragon Ball remains a mainstay on Poland’s first independent TV station, which is offered as part of the nation’s largest satellite provider Cyfrowy Polsat.

The innovative broadcaster allows viewers to switch from the Polish dub to Japanese audio with a remote. Not too shabby for a linear channel, and a wonderful way of giving viewers the freedom to choose whatever version they prefer or are in the mood for watching.

Dragon Ball Super, which Polsat Games at the time aired weekdays at 4pm allowed the channel to reach 1.4 thousand homes and became their most popular programme.

And while Super was the first Dragon Ball TV anime to receive a traditional dub it has not been the last, as last year Polsat Games began airing Dragon Ball Kai, which it continues to air alongside Super to this day.

Currently Polsat Games airs Dragon Ball Kai weekdays from 9am-10am, 12:30pm-2pm, 3:30pm-4:30pm while Dragon Ball Super airs Monday-Friday from 11am-12:30pm. On weekends Polsat Games treats viewers to various quintuple airings of both Super and Kai, with the former airing Saturday from 2pm-4:30pm, Sundays 8am-10:30am and the latter airs Sunday from 11am-1:30pm, 2pm-4:30pm.

As we speak the morning and afternoon weekday timeslots for Dragon Ball Kai have wrapped up the Saiyan arc and now begin with the early Namek arc, although the timeslots around midday on the same days are in the middle of the Cell arc. Dragon Ball Super has also finished up another rerun of the Goku Black arc and is to begin another rerun of the Tournament of Power arc.

For more information see the full listings for Polsat Games on the week this article was written.

With so much time allotted to Dragon Ball on their channel it seems safe to assume that Polsat Games and Studio PDK, the dubbing facility behind the recent Kai dub will have their eyes on Dragon Ball Daima whenever that is being licensed for Poland.

I hope fans will get it, this recent surge of Polish Dragon Ball dubs is long overdue considering there was one time when all they had was Dragon Ball Z movies 12-13.
